Nothing says freedom quite like a
Harley-Davidson. Harley-Davidson is a major company
making the best motorcycles in the world. The company did not do so well
until 1983 when they almost went bankrupt. One of the
grandsons of the founders, Willy Davidson, together with other
investors, took over the company and started production again.
The machines were improved, as the older models had a
reputation for leaking oil, being difficult to start, etc. Now
they are absolutely wonderful. Even the sound of the engine is
patented: nobody is allowed to copy the sound these machines
make.
During that time the HOG — the Harley Owners Group — was also
created. Today, there are more than 1 million members
worldwide, which makes it the largest factory sponsored
motorcycle club in the world. Every Harley-Davidson dealer has
a Chapter, or there is a HOG Chapter linked to an official
dealer.
You have to
sit on the machine to be able to understand, feel the
vibration and hear its pure mechanical throb. It’s a
lifestyle; there’s no plastic - it’s all pure metal! The
legacy that comes with it; the tradition and the history
since the company started in 1903.
In 2003,
Harley-Davidson celebrated its 100th anniversary. More
than 250,000 motorbikes gathered in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, from all over the world.
There is good and bad in everything. We, for our
part, share the true legacy and we invest all our
passion and time and enthusiasm to make this
legacy live on.
However, the image problem is changing now, for
several reasons. Today you can buy a
Harley-Davidson motorcycle already for CHF 10,400
and start to be part of this gropup of enthusiasts
So driving a Harley is no more expensive but
somehow still very exclusive.
Harley-Davidsons come in such a wide variety of
shapes and sizes it's sometimes tough to keep them
all straight. But every year a thin slice of the
Harley's meaty lineup scores the CVO treatment.
Short for Custom Vehicles Operations, Harley's
boutique CVO division is responsible for pushing
the envelope on both styling and performance.
For 2009, Harley has created limited edition
versions of the Fat Bob, Softail Springer, Road
Glide and Ultra Classic Electra Glide, there is
also the new Rocker and Rocker C. As with all CVOs
from years past, some of the trick styling cues
from this small stable of exclusive bikes might
someday trickle down to the standard lineup. Not
for the shy (or the short of cash), these bikes
offer the ultimate expression of what Harley can
do through innovative design, engineering and
accessorizing.
One of the things Harley owners prize most is the
vigorous aftermarket industry that allows them to
customize their machines in any number of ways.
Virtually every piece of bodywork, engine
component or suspicion part can be dialed in using
aftermarket suppliers. Harley Davidsons can be
transformed into café racers, rat bikes, flat
trackers, choppers or ultimate cruisers with the
addition of just a few select parts. And this is
the real magic of the machine: Like America,
Harley Davidsons adaptable, stubborn and full of
character.
There aren't many options left for the person
seeking pure, unadulterated adventure. Luckily,
the excitement-hungry can still climb on a Harley
and ride off into the sunset, finding the
exhilaration they crave, and discovering new
sights and experiences on the open road. There's
nothing like the feeling of climbing atop a
rumbling Harley and temporarily leaving your
responsibilities behind in the dust. When you're
on the road, you answer only to yourself. How you
spend your time is up to you. Come and
capture all the
freedom, muscle and grit that are the hallmarks of
the world’s most famous motorcycle manufacturer.
